Deceased Name: Dr. Leonard F. Abramson Dr. Leonard F. Abramson, 86, of East Superior Street, a
Duluth dentist in practice for 60 years, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 1996, in
St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. A lifelong Duluth resident, he was a graduate of Central
High School and a 1934 graduate of the University of Minnesota Dental School.
Dr. Abramson was a two-year Air Force veteran of World War
II, having served in the European Theater. He was a member of Adas Israel Synagogue and the Jewish
Fellowship Club, the American Legion, a lifetime member of the VFW and a
member of the Air Force Officers Club. He was a member of the Northeast
District Dental Society, the Minnesota Dental Association and was awarded
lifetime memberships in the Chicago Dental Association and the American
Dental Association. He served on boards of both St. Luke's and St. Mary's
hospitals in Duluth and received an award in 1985 from St. Mary's in
recognition of his many years of service on the medical staff. Throughout his career, Dr. Abramson worked on developing
products and techniques related to sterilization and infection control. In
1970, he received an award from Johnson & Johnson for creativity in the
field of dentistry. He became the first dentist in the U.S. to develop a means
of sterilizing the dental drill handpiece at the chair, and received
worldwide acknowledgement for his research. Besides his family and his profession, Dr. Abramson's
other "life-love" was helping people, which he did throughout his
life. He was someone who made a difference in the lives of many people who
came to know him. Survivors include his wife of 61 years on Oct. 3, Rose; a
son, Wesley of St. Paul; a daughter, Marla of Minneapolis; a sister, Vivian
of Portland, Ore.; two brothers, Bill of Milwaukee and Palmer of Minneapolis;
and two grandchildren, Paige and Jody. Services: 1:30 p.m. today in Johnson Mortuary. Interment
will be in Adas Israel Cemetery, Rice Lake Township. Arrangements are by
Johnson Mortuary. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Mayo

Duluth. She was born Dec. 13, 1913 in Superior, Wisc. Rose graduated from Central High School and attended
Superior Teachers' College where she was an accomplished member of the debate
team. She was married October 3, 1935 to Dr. Leonard F.
Abramson. Rose was a member of Adas Israel Synagogue and Hadassah.
She served several terms as president of the Northeast District Dental
Auxiliary (formerly the Duluth District Dental Society) and was active in the
Duluth Air Force Officers' Wives Club. Rose was a gentle and kind lady who celebrated life and
found joy in friendship and music. She was a pianist who loved sharing her
gift of music with others, performing throughout her life. She began as an
accompanist for the Sterling Dance Studio of Superior, performed at many
events over her lifetime, including the ''Save Old Central,'' a three day
extravaganza promoted by Jay Lurye. Until two weeks ago, Rose held weekly
sing-alongs with the residents of Westwood. Known for her ''smile that lights up a room,'' Rose was a
warm, giving person who brought joy to the lives of people of all ages. Her
gentle humor, warm heart and generous spirit will be greatly missed by her
family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dr.
Leonard F. Abramson; parents, Israel B. and Sarah Laurie; three brothers,
Sam, George and Louis Laurie; and granddaughter, Paige Yvonne Johnson. Survivors include son, Wesley, Duluth; daughter, Marla
Johnson (Dr. Robert Sorenson), Minneapolis; granddaughter, Jody Johnson; and
sisters, Sadie and Edythe Laurie of Minneapolis. SERVICES:1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in Dougherty Funeral
Home, 600 E. 2nd Street, Duluth. Interment will be at Adas Israel Cemetery,
Rice Lake Township. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials be
made to the St. Lukes Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of the donor's
